Philip Ryan

Philip Ryan is a visual artist from Clonmel, Tipperary, currently residing in Waterford, Ireland. He founded Nocht Studio, a collaborative art practice with Martin McGloin in 2018. He graduated from the Dublin School of Architecture with first class honours in 2013 and has worked in the architecture and design industry in Ireland, the UK and New Zealand. He was Associate Director of Kenneth Hennessy Architects, before focusing on Nocht in late 2021.

His personal work has been selected for the Describing Architecture exhibition and featured in the Architects’ Journal in the UK, the Royal Institute of Architects Ireland Journal, Architecture Ireland magazine and Irish Construction’s Plan Magazine in Ireland. He was nominated for the Silver Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was the winner of the 2013 Coillte Third Level Student Wood Awards in the architecture category.

Philip has been involved in public-based children’s workshops in Ireland with Commonage: Callan, the Irish Architecture Foundation, Open House Dublin, South Dublin County Council, and the National Learning Network.

Nocht Studio is an emerging collaborative art studio that focuses on made objects and interactive experiences. The studio was founded in 2018 by Martin McGloin and Philip Ryan, with studios and workshops in both Clonmel, Tipperary and Beltra, Sligo. Martin and Philip have extensive experience in delivering high value projects to time sensitive deadlines for private clients, commercial enterprises and public bodies.

Exploring the concept of self and other through perceived human experience in the physical and digital world, Nocht predominantly work in the mediums of light, sound, music, and film through installations and made objects.

Nocht was selected for ‘New Work’, an exhibition curated by Anne Mullee and held in South Tipperary Arts Centre in 2020. Their piece, “Coming out to Play?”, was selected for the Inside|Out Exhibition for by South Tipperary Arts Centre & In The Open | Faoin Spéir Festival in 2022. website
